Email Items

Inside this issue:

There has been a lot of vandalism lately in the world of email.

Spammers continue to pump out ever-increasing amounts of spam and the MyDoom virus and its many variants have wreaked havoc on many mail servers.

Many people are seeing bounce messages about mail they never sent. We've written about this in several past issues. Please see our August 2003 issue for more information.

Valentine's Day is the 14th!

We installed two more anti-virus programs on our incoming mail servers to handle the increase in virus traffic. We normally averaged one virus per hour (24 per day), but now we're seeing around 150 per hour (3,600 per day).

Several people have also asked about a message they received titled “DO NOT DELETE THIS MESSAGE.” This message is created by the mail server after you use our new WebMail and it is perfectly safe to delete.

We are currently working on a way to prevent the mail server from creating this message and avoid confusion.

PopUp Blockers

Many people have asked what we recommend for a popup blocker; something to prevent those annoying popup ads that show up when you visit some web sites.

The best popup blocker we've found is a free tool from Google. It's a tool bar that gets installed on Internet Explorer and also lets you do a google search without having to go to their web site first.

You can get their toolbar at toolbar.google.com/.

New Dialup Lines

By now, most of you have changed your dialup access numbers. If you have not already done so, please make this change as soon as possible.

The only change to your dialup settings is the number you dial. All other settings remain the same.

You can find simple instructions on how to

change your dialup access number at
www.cove.com/NewSettings/.

There is also a link to this page on our Help page for your convenience.

If you need assistance changing your dialup access number, please do not hesitate to call our tech support team at 877-221-2116.

Help Desk Notes

SysAdmin's Corner

It was a quiet month at the help desk.

Most calls were for account setup information.

If you ever need help, please select tech support (Option 2) if you call our main office. This

will enable you to get our dialup access numbers, email settings or our toll-free help desk number.

Please remember, our help desk team is available to you 24 hours a day and the direct, toll free number is
877-221-2116.

This was a very busy month for us!

We built and installed a new POP server, a new radius server and terminal server for our new dialup access lines and a new web server for our virtual web hosting customers.

We updated our WebMail software and made several changes to mail routing within our network.

We also installed additional anti-virus email filters to protect against the MyDoom virus and its many variants.

New Subscriber Referral Promotion!

Are you pleased with our service? Do you know someone who is unhappy with their current Internet or On-line service?

Why not do them and yourself a favor?

Just recommend our service. If they subscribe, we'll give you a free month of access!

They will appreciate your advice and you'll save a little money.

Again this month, over a dozen subscribers are getting their access in February for free - just by referring new subscribers.

Everybody wins!

Did You Know?

Our incoming mail servers process an average of 3,200 messages an hour. Of those, only about 120 are legitimate messages.

You can see how Cove's MailCheck processes incoming mail at
mrtg.cove.com/mrtg/MailCheck/.

Happy Valentine's Day!
