New Secure Server

Inside this issue:

We have been working on the new secure server for several months and are almost ready to put it into production.

Work on this server was postponed while we protected our network from several large spamming attacks in August and September.

This new secure server will replace our old secure server and will support our upgraded WebMail service and all services requiring secure web forms, such as our Sales

forms, OpenSRS interface and the “Change My Account” form.

Our secure forms have all been ported over from perl/cgi to Java, making them much more stable and secure.

In all, twelve applications were upgraded.

Our upgraded WebMail service now prevents premature logoffs on browsers not supporting cookies and we are still working on the ability to delete messages without having to log out of the service.

We plan on swapping out the secure servers either the third or fourth weekend in October.

New T1 Installation

With any luck, we should be able to swap out our primary T1 to the Internet this month.

This circuit was ordered four months ago, but Verizon had to expand their facilities

in Salem to accommodate us.

Verizon technicians have visited our Salem network center several times over the past few weeks to complete the final planning.

We will alert everyone via email in advance of the swap, which will cause a brief network outage.

Spamming Viruses

It had to happen sooner or later. Two of the Internet's greatest nuisances, spam and viruses, have now combined to create --spamming viruses!

Many recent spam attacks are the result of spamming viruses. Infected computers send thousands of spam messages each day without the owner being aware.

Fortunately our VirusCheck software removes these viruses from your Cove mail.

However, computers running Windows are open to non-

email infections. Your best defense is to install Microsoft patches as soon as they are available. For most people, the simplest solution is to enable auto-updates on your Windows computer.

Help Desk Notes

SysAdmin's Corner

It was a quiet month at the help desk.

Most calls were for account setup information.

If you ever need help, please select tech support (Option 2) if you call our main office. This

will enable you to get our dialup access numbers, email settings or our toll-free help desk number.

Please remember, our help desk team is available to you 24 hours a day and the direct, toll free number is
877-221-2116.

This was mainly a quiet month on the network.

Our dialup line provider had an outage on September 25 which lasted roughly from 9 am to 11 am.

As mentioned earlier, we are

completing the upgrades to our WebMail service and preparing to install the new secure server.

Our next project is the development of a new Java-based Bulletin Board service and Instant Messaging service.

New Subscriber Referral Promotion!

Are you pleased with our service? Do you know someone who is unhappy with their current Internet or On-line service?

Why not do them and yourself a favor?

Just recommend our service. If they subscribe, we'll give you a free month of access!

They will appreciate your advice and you'll save a little money.

Again this month, over a dozen subscribers are getting their access in October for free - just by referring new subscribers.

Everybody wins!

Did You Know?

Do you get a lot of messages tagged as {SPAM?}? Wish you didn't have to download all those messages?

Why not preview your email in our WebMail service and hit the Delete All Spam button! That way, you can remove all those messages before downloading.

Trick or Treat!
