Our Unsung Hero

Inside this issue:

There is someone constantly working behind the scenes at Cove.

During the day he can sometimes be found building a server at our Salem facility. He often works well into the wee hours monitoring the flow of spam into our network and fine-tuning our anti-spam software to minimize the amount that gets through.

Our unsung hero is Mr. Don Tobin.

Good time for fishing!

Don has worked with computers longer than most college students have been alive.

During his long career he has been a computer technician at financial institutions on Wall Street, worked for several local computer stores in Salem and Beverly, and most recently managed the server for the Essex County Newspapers' web sites.

Don has been an important asset to Cove for many years; he has built most of our servers and has spent many late nights troubleshooting problems.

We are lucky to have him working with us.

Web Hosting Platform Migration

The migration to the new web hosting platform will involve three stages. The first stage will transfer all web sites over to a temporary server. The second will transfer

all web sites to the new platform. The third stage will transfer all virtual domain-based (non-cove.com) mail to a new mail server on the platform.

We will be in contact with each web hosting customer at each stage of the migration to coordinate any changes needed on their end.

New Data Center?

We are looking into the possibility of moving our operations from our Salem facility to a data center in Marlboro, MA. This move would occur in January 2005.

Since we moved into the Salem facility in February 1995, our operations have grown from a single server to almost 40 servers. We have now maxed out our current resources at this facility.

Moving our servers to a data center would provide us with plenty of power, security and environmental support.

We would continue to provide Internet access to businesses in Shetland Park. We would also continue providing dialup access in our current service areas.

Help Desk Notes

SysAdmin's Corner

It was a busy month at the help desk!

Most calls were for setup information and instructions on how to receive email.

If you ever need help, please select tech support (Option 2) if you call our main office. This

will enable you to get our dialup access numbers, email settings or our toll-free help desk number.

Please remember, our help desk team is available to you 24 hours a day and the direct, toll free number is
877-221-2116.

This was a relatively quiet month on the network.

Our upstream providers reported no outages and our servers had no downtime.

We are now making the last-minute preparations for migrating our web hosting

services over to the new H-Sphere platform. This migration involves the building and transfer of six Unix servers and two Windows 2000 Advanced Servers.

The whole process will likely take the entire month of July to complete.

New Subscriber Referral Promotion!

Are you pleased with our service? Do you know someone who is unhappy with their current Internet or On-line service?

Why not do them and yourself a favor?

Just recommend our service. If they subscribe, we'll give you a free month of access!

They will appreciate your advice and you'll save a little money.

Again this month, several subscribers are getting their access in July for free - just by referring new subscribers.

Everybody wins!

Did You Know?

Our Cove Cam was one of the first online cameras in Massachusetts.

The Cove Cam was initially positioned to view Pickering Wharf below our Salem facility. Later it was re-positioned to view the Friendship, a replica of an 18th Century East Indiaman vessel.
