Fake Emails

Inside this issue:

We ran this article in last month's newsletter, but since we received so many calls and emails about this nuisance we are running the article again.

Many of you have probably noticed “bounce messages” in your inbox lately.

A “bounce message” is a message from an email server telling you that the email address in the “To:” part of a message you sent is not a valid address...normally.

Great time for sailing!

Spammers, in their never-ending quest to hide their identities have now taken to using other peoples' email addresses in the “From:” part of their spam messages.

There is no need for concern if you receive a “bounce message.”

Spammers are not singling you out; they just randomly use addresses from their mailing lists. There is also nothing you, or we, can do about it.

Just ignore them.

Time Marches On

This month marks the beginning of the ninth year for our newsletter!

This newsletter started out as a simple letter to our subscribers, telling them what

was happening “behind all those modems.”

The first newsletter did not mark the start of our services, however. We started

offering our service to the public in mid-March, 1995.

Cove Communications was formed in October, 1994 and we moved into our Salem facility in January, 1995.

WebMail Glitches

Several subscribers have described two problems using our WebMail.

The most common problem is that messages were deleted during a session, but then re-

appeared the next time the subscriber checked their messages. This is due to the person not logging out of WebMail once they were through. Please remember that messages will only be

permanently deleted after you logout of WebMail.

The other problem is that people kept getting logged off prematurely.

This is due to not having cookies enabled in your browser. We have discovered a workaround for this and are re-writing our WebMail software to correct this.

Help Desk Notes

SysAdmin's Corner

It was a quiet month at the help desk.

Most calls were for account setup information.

If you ever need help, please select tech support (Option 2) if you call our main office. This

will enable you to get our dialup access numbers, email settings or our toll-free help desk number.

Please remember, our help desk team is available to you 24 hours a day and the direct, toll free number is
877-221-2116.

This was mainly a quiet month on the network.

Our dialup access line provider experienced a few outages early in the month.

Work continues on our server upgrades and java

development projects. We will let you know as each project is completed.

The conversion of our sales forms from perl/cgi to java servlets and JSP should be completed within the first week of August.

New Subscriber Referral Promotion!

Are you pleased with our service? Do you know someone who is unhappy with their current Internet or On-line service?

Why not do them and yourself a favor?

Just recommend our service. If they subscribe, we'll give you a free month of access!

They will appreciate your advice and you'll save a little money.

Again this month, over a dozen subscribers are getting their access in August for free - just by referring new subscribers.

Everybody wins!

Did You Know?

Did you know our MailCheck service blocks an average of 8,400 spam messages and tags an average of 10,800 spam messages every day?

You can see the stats of our MailCheck service in action at http://mrtg.cove.com/mrtg/MailCheck/.

Come on in, the water's fine!
