V.92 Modems Are Here! |
|
Our modems now support the new V.92 standards. V.92's most exciting feature, modem-on-hold, allows you to stay on-line without missing an important phone call. Until now, if you had a single phone line, you had to choose between using the telephone and accessing the Internet, even if you had Call Waiting. All modems prior to V.92 interpret a Call Waiting signal as a disconnect that knocks you off-line; forcing you to dial in again and reestablish your connection. We have disabled |
|
incoming call and then reestablish the connection to pick up where you left off. V.92 also provides faster upload speeds, a real help when sending e-mail
with large attachments. V.92 modems can also connect to our modems in half the time.

You may also get faster downloads. The V.44 standard used by V.92 modems is optimized for the web's graphics-heavy content and can improve the speed of web page downloads from 10 to 120 percent depending on your connection |
speed and the web content you're viewing. More information on our new V.92 dialup service can be found on our V.92 page at www.cove.com/v92.html. |

You may have trouble viewing attachments if you upgrade your Outlook Express. As a security measure, newer versions of Outlook Express prevent the viewing of |
attachments by default. To disable this feature, look in Tools>Options> Security for the option and uncheck the box. |
There is no cause for alarm if you occasionally receive messages from anti-virus programs stating that you had sent a virus to someone. There is also no need to reply to those messages. |
The Klez-H virus and its variants have the ability to spread themselves via email using a valid email address other than that of the true sender, including yours. |

This was also a quiet month on the network. None of our upstream providers had any incidents to report. This month was spent upgrading servers. Our progress has been hindered by a number of failures with the |
replacement hardware. We are now thoroughly testing all new hardware before it is installed. This month we are also beginning to move our web forms from perl/cgi to java for added security. |
