Server Upgrades

Inside this issue:

We have acquired quite a few servers over the past eight years!

Several of our older servers are due for hardware overhauls and software upgrades. This preventive maintenance helps us avoid unexpected hardware failures and partial service interruptions.

Since January is typically a slow month and we fortunately have an expert hardware technician available, we are taking this opportunity to

perform upgrades on many of our servers and refurbish our uninterruptible power supplies (UPS).

The majority of these servers “work in the background,” so you won't even be aware the upgrades are being performed. Others serve as secondaries, or backup servers, and will also have no effect on daily operations.

The few servers that perform “frontline” tasks will be temporarily replaced while they are being upgraded, in the same manner our POP3 server was upgraded last month.

AutoReply Service

Our AutoReply service was installed on December 21 and became available on December 23.

AutoReply automatically replies to your

email while you are unavailable. This can be very handy when you are away on vacation.

It enables you to create your own personal reply message and specify the

time and date your autoresponder will start and end.

You must first login to WebMail to access the AutoReply setup form.

Virus Hoaxes

Virus hoaxes can sometimes be as disruptive as real viruses. These hoaxes quickly spread throughout the Internet, taking advantage of casual users' unfamiliarity with viruses

and how the work. Hoaxes often suggest the user delete one or more files on their computer and that may affect the computer's ability to perform.

Cove subscribers are protected from viruses sent via email. As long as you do not use a non-Cove email account and do not use floppy disks used in other computers,

chances are very good you will not get a virus.

We post a “Top 10 virus hoaxes” list at the bottom of the Internet section of our web site.

Help Desk Notes

SysAdmin's Corner

Aside from the two dialup incidents, it was a quiet month at the help desk.

Most calls were for account setup information.

If you ever need help, please select tech support if you call our main office numbers. This will enable you to get our

access numbers, email settings or talk with someone at our help desk.

Please remember, our help desk team is available to you 24 hours a day and the direct, toll free number is
877-221-2116.

Our new access line provider had two outages which affected dialup access on December 4 and December 12. They have since installed redundant circuits, so this should not happen again.

No other network problems were reported.

We successfully upgraded our POP3 server on December 21. It looks like no one was inconvenienced by the upgrade.

We are now performing preventive maintenance on several older servers and back up power supplies.

New Subscriber Referral Promotion!

Are you pleased with our service? Do you know someone who is unhappy with their current Internet or On-line service?

Why not do them and yourself a favor?

Just recommend our service. If they subscribe, we'll give you a free month of access!

They will appreciate your advice and you'll save a little money.

Again this month, over a dozen subscribers are getting their access in January for free - just by referring new subscribers.

Everybody wins!
