Network Upgrades

Inside this issue:

Traffic on the Cove network is typically low during the summer months making it the perfect time to perform upgrades.

We have several upgrades planned over the next two months.

A new router will be installed at the Gloucester High School. This will result in a brief network outage which will only affect users on the municipal and school networks.

A new T1 will be installed at our Salem facility. We will

Have a great 4th of July!

most likely swap over to this new T1 on a weekend to minimize downtime, but all users can expect a brief loss in services during the swap. We will send broadcast messages before and after so you will be aware of the downtime.

We will also be swapping out racks at our Salem facility on either July 5 or 6. (Note: the date for this project has moved to July 12-13, as we are still waiting for some equipment to arrive. - ed) This involves moving servers, which will also cause a brief loss in services as each server is moved. We expect the downtime caused by these moves to only be between 5 to 10 minutes.

National "Do Not Call" List

Are you fed up with telemarketers?

Now you can finally do something about it!

The Federal Government established a national “Do Not Call” list on June 27. You can get your number added to this list by going to www.donotcall.gov and filling out their form.

This is a welcome, overdue solution to the telemarketing problem.

Now if only they would establish a “Do Not Email” list...

Fake Emails

Many of you have probably noticed “bounce messages” in your inbox lately.

A “bounce message” is a message from an email server telling you that the email

address in the “To:” part of a message you sent is not a valid address...normally.

Spammers, in their never-ending quest to hide their identities have now taken to

using other peoples' email addresses in the “From:” part of their spam messages.

There is no need for concern if you receive a “bounce message.” Spammers are not

singling you out; they just randomly use addresses from their mailing lists. There is also nothing you, or we, can do about it.

Just ignore them.

Help Desk Notes

SysAdmin's Corner

It was a quiet month at the help desk.

Most calls were for account setup information.

If you ever need help, please select tech support (Option 2) if you call our main office. This

will enable you to get our dialup access numbers, email settings or our toll-free help desk number.

Please remember, our help desk team is available to you 24 hours a day and the direct, toll free number is
877-221-2116.

This was mainly a quiet month on the network. Our upstream provider had some routing issues on May 15 for about 20 minutes (3:50 to 4:10 pm).

Our dialup access line provider experienced a few outages early in the month: a 15 minute outage (5:55 to 6:10 pm) on June 5, a 1.5 hour outage (6:30 to 8 am) on

June 6 and a 10.25 hour outage (6:30 am to 4:45 pm) on June 7. All of these outages were due to power outages at their network operations center.

Work continues on our server upgrades and java development projects. We will let you know as each project is completed.

Did You Know?

You can set up your own autoresponder to let people know when you will be unavailable to reply to their email messages?

Just log on to our WebMail and click on the “autoresponder” link. Please note that the system will only handle one autoresponder per address at a time.

Summer is finally here!
