(Yet Another) SpamCheck Upgrade

Inside this issue:

When it comes to fighting spam, the fun never ends!

Only three months ago we upgraded our anti-spam tools, but in that short time some clever spammers have discovered ways to avoid many of our traps.

Most other ISPs are experiencing the same problem; no sooner do we find an anti-spam solution then spammers find a way around it. It's appears to be a never-ending cycle.

Spring is Finally Here!

Yet, recent improvements in some anti-spam software shows promise in breaking this cycle.

Our SpamCheck software

suite includes one of these software packages. This software now includes a “self learning” mechanism. By analyzing the characteristics of known good email and known spam, the software is now better able to judge the “spamminess” of “borderline” messages.

We now also have a way for us to “correct” SpamCheck if it judges a message incorrectly.

News Server Note

We provide Usenet service with our dialup access plans.

Usenet newsgroups are online discussions on virtually any topic you can imagine.

There are currently over 30,000 topics being discussed on Usenet.

You can access Usenet by setting the NNTP server to news.cove.com in your browser.

Use your dialup login (username@cove.com) and password if you get asked for a username and password.

New Office Phone Menu

We will be making some changes to our office phone menu this month.

Our goal is to make the menu more user-friendly and with fewer options.

One major change is that you will no longer access our tech support team directly through our main office lines. This was the result of our changing phone service on those lines

from our old centrex plan to regular business service.

The phone number to dial for tech support is still 877-221-2116.

We will also be making separate menus for business and non-business hours to help avoid any confusion.

Help Desk Notes

SysAdmin's Corner

It was a quiet month at the help desk.

Most calls were for account setup information.

Several subscribers found that their old AOL dialup was interfering with their Cove

dialup settings. Their Cove dialup worked fine once they removed the AOL dialup.

Please remember, our help desk team is available to you 24 hours a day and the direct, toll free number is
877-221-2116.

This was mainly a quiet month on the network. StoweTel had a phone line issue on April 1 that began at 10 AM, but it only lasted a half hour.

Last month was spent upgrading servers and we will

continue those upgrades through may.

We also began moving our web forms from perl/cgi to java for added security. This project is scheduled to be completed by the end of june.

New Subscriber Referral Promotion!

Are you pleased with our service? Do you know someone who is unhappy with their current Internet or On-line service?

Why not do them and yourself a favor?

Just recommend our service. If they subscribe, we'll give you a free month of access!

They will appreciate your advice and you'll save a little money.

Again this month, over a dozen subscribers are getting their access in May for free - just by referring new subscribers.

Everybody wins!

Did You Know?

Did you know you that Usenet began in late 1979?

It pre-dates the WorldWideWeb by eleven years; the web "officially" began in 1991.

The Internet itself began in its current form (using tcp/ip) in 1982. Email began in its earliest form in 1977.

Time to start planting soon!
