Cape Ann Lines Become Fully Digital
All of our access lines in Cape Ann will be fully digital by December 8!
This means that all of our Cape Ann access lines will now support 56k access.
Digital lines are noise-free and noise is the main cause of failed connections and slow transmission speeds, so this switchover will improve the overall performance of our access lines.
Subscribers who use 14.4k, 28.8k and 33.6k modems will still be able to dial into the new digital 56k lines without any difficulty, in fact their connections will most likely improve.
If you currently dial into our old analog lines (e.g., numbers starting with 283 or 281), you will need to change your access number to 9786755900 by December 8.
Changing your access number is easy. See the following articles for instructions.
If you have any trouble, just call us, we're always happy to help!
Changing Your Access Number
If you own a PC running Windows, just double click the My Computer icon (on your desktop) and then double click the Dialup Networking icon.
Right click (once) on the Cove icon and then click on Properties (from the resulting pull-down menu).
The Properties window shows the access number.
Just replace that number with 9786755900 and then click the OK button.
That's all there is to it!
If you use a Mac running Mac OS 8.1 or higher, just go to the apple menu, select control panels and then open PPP (this may also be called Remote Access).
In that window, all you have to do is replace the phone number with 9786755900.
If you use a Mac running Mac OS 8.0 or lower, we assume you are using FreePPP.
First go to FreePPP Setup (from the telephone icon on the top of your desktop screen).
Double click on accounts, then click on the Cove connection, then click on Edit.
In that window, just replace the phone number with 9786755900.
Help Desk Notes
Aside from the two brief network outages, it was another quiet month at the Cove Help Desk.
We continue to see people try to login using their real names.
Please remember you must login using your user name (your email address without the @cove.com part).
As always, if you have any trouble, please call us.
We're here to help you!
SysAdmin's Corner
There was a disruption in our T-1 line between Salem and Gloucester in the early hours of November 9. Service was restored just after 9 am.
Conversent moved our T-1s going to Boston to their new Sonet ring at about 9:15 am on November 21. This move also caused a service disruption for just a few minutes.
We are still eagerly waiting for Lucent to provide their V.92 upgrade for our 56k digital modems.
Subscriber Referral Program
Are you pleased with our service? Do you know someone who is unhappy with their current Internet/On-line service?

Again this month, over a dozen subscribers are getting their access in December for free - by referring new subscribers.
