Volume 6 Issue 1
Microsoft Woes
Aside from the anti-trust case, Microsoft has also been having problems with its software.
A serious security problem has been identified that involves email downloaded through Outlook and Outlook Express. The details of this problem can be found at www.microsoft.com/technet/security/bulletin/ms00-043.asp.
Subscribers are urged to download and install the “patch” being provided by Microsoft to eliminate this vulnerability. The “patch” can be found at www.microsoft.com/windows/ie/download/critical/patch9.htm.
As if that weren't enough, the beta version of Internet Explorer 5.5 causes people's Internet connection to cease functioning. The only fix is to remove the beta version of IE 5.5!
The final release of IE 5.5 is now available and this problem has since been fixed.
The lesson to be learned here is to be wary of any beta version of any software!
Anniversary Issue
This issue marks the sixth year of our newsletter!
The newsletter started out as a simple letter to our subscribers, telling them what was happening “behind all those modems.”
Over the years the newsletter has served as our way to alert you of important events concerning the network and to inform you of interesting developments within our network and throughout the Internet.
We look forward to providing this newsletter to you for many years to come.
Domain Name Registrations
We recently passed the technical tests given by the Open Shared Registry System (OpenSRS). Our new certification will allow us to provide domain name registration and management services within the month.
The OpenSRS is an ICANN-accredited, low cost alternative to using Network Solutions for registering domains.
We chose to become affiliated with the OpenSRS because it is much more reliable and user-friendly compared to some of the other domain name registries.
You will be able to access this service through our Sales & Services Section or at:

Help Desk Notes
Would you like to get your email while away, but don't want to change someone else's email settings?
The easiest way is to use a web-based solution! There is now a web site, mailstart.com, which enables you to access your email at our mail server from any web browser (e.g., Netscape or Internet Explorer) and from anywhere on earth with an Internet connection.
All you have to do is type in your email address and password!
SysAdmin's Corner
Again in July, the network hummed along quite nicely and very few calls were received at the help desk.
We have been very busy adding new applications to our secure Stronghold server, including order forms for our web-based training and domain name registration and management services.
This month we plan on completing the final phase of our web server upgrade. Web site customers will be notified by email in advance of this final phase.
Subscriber Referral Program
Are you pleased with our service? Do you know someone who is unhappy with their current Internet/On-line service?
Why not do them and yourself a favor?
Just recommend our service. If they subscribe, we'll give you a free month of access!
They will appreciate your advice and you'll save a little money.
Again this month, over a dozen subscribers are getting their access in August for free - by referring new subscribers.
Everybody wins!
