Volume 5 Issue 1
Our Newsletter's 5th Anniversary!
This issue marks the fifth anniversary of our newsletter!
To celebrate, we decided to give it an entirely new look...hope you like it.
The old-timers will remember our first issues. The first issues looked more like letters than newsletters, in fact, they even had a signature block! That style lasted about a year.
Later we had a graphic artist create our header image, which was used on the last newsletter and is still used today. You may notice that we also put this graphic in the mariner's compass used on our website.
The first newsletter did not mark the start of our services, however. We started offering our service to the public in mid-March, 1995.
Cove Communications was formed in October, 1994. We moved into our Salem offices in January, 1995 and it took close to three months to get the network operational.
Our New Website
Judging from the positive feedback we've received to date, it seems our new website is a success!
Many people like the mariner's compass. Others have found the new site easier to navigate...thanks for the kudos, we really appreciate them!
You may have noticed that the TimeCheck feature is back; it is still accessible from our Administrivia Page.
The Community Bulletin Board is being moved to another server and will return by the end of August.
Anti-Spam Measures
For the past few months, we have asked subscribers to forward any spam they receive to abuse@cove.com.
The response has been minimal and most of it comes from the same few people. We are still uncertain, however, if this is an accurate indicator of the amount of spam actually being received by subscribers.
We take the abusive approach of spammers seriously and take every measure to prevent their use of our network.
Please help us fight the war on spam!
New Subscriber Referral Promotion!
Are you pleased with our service? Do you know someone who is unhappy with their current Internet/On-line service?
Why not do them, and yourself, a favor?
Just recommend our service to them. If they subscribe, we will give you a month of access - no charge!
They will appreciate your advice and you'll save a little money!
Again this month, over a dozen subscribers are getting their access in August for free - by referring new subscribers.
Everybody wins!
Help Desk Notes
It has been a very quiet month for the help desk. The few calls we received mainly resulted from subscribers recovering from system crashes.
We ask our subscribers who are new to the Internet to spend a little time with our Help Page. There, you will find several references on using browsers and email programs. There is also a very good tutorial site called the Beginner's Guide, which contains many interesting, informative links and pages.
SysAdmin's Corner
All is quiet at The Cove.
There were no significant outages on our network or our upstream providers' networks to report.
If you are interested in seeing the Internet's performance statistics, we recommend the Internet Traffic Report, located at the bottom of the Internet Section of our website.
We are also working on presenting performance statistics on our own network. This feature is planned to begin in the Fall.
Internet Training
Classes at our Salem facility will be in August on the 23rd and in September on the 7th and 21st.
The classes are only $20 for a 3-hour, hands on session.
Classes are only held if we have at least four people scheduled to attend, so reservations are highly recommended.
What's New at the Cove is a monthly publication of Cove Communications.
