Our New Websites
The entire staff is now concentrating their efforts on rolling out several new websites, including an updated version of the Cove’s site.
www.cove.com
Fear not! In the past, we have experimented with new techniques and languages, which have not always worked properly with some of our subscribers’ browsers. The upgraded Cove website will be fully tested for compliance before being ‘published’ next month.
www.northofboston.net
This new website presents the histories of our cities and towns. The site has been in development for over two years and will also be launched next month. The content was written by a local graduate from Oxford University, Michele Ayers.
www.gate-wave.net
This new website is a specialized search engine for finding goods and services from local companies. This site has also been in development for over two years and will be launched in the next month or two.
The site’s primary goal is to promote commerce in our area. This new search engine will automatically link to websites hosted by Cove.
A Note on Viruses
The media has been full of reports on viruses lately. Magazines, newspapers, television newscasts and even email from trusted sources tell horror stories of ‘evil’ viruses that do unspeakable things to innocent computers.
We urge you to take all of this ‘news’ with a grain of salt. The problem is not as prevalent as the media would like you to believe.
In fact, many ‘viral incidents’ can be explained by common computer ailments, such as hard drive failures, etc.
Prudent, cautious use and a good measure of common sense will most likely spare you any trouble from any virus.
For those interested in learning more about viruses, we recommend www.cert.org and ciac.llnl.gov. Those interested in uncovering the current Internet hoaxes and myths will enjoy www.kumite.com/myths.
Help Desk Notes
We have received many calls this month on our Gloucester line, from subscribers' modems! Please take note that 282-3399 is a voice line and not a modem line.
Several people had trouble downloading large email attachment. Most email programs have a way to skip these large messages. To find out how, please call the office.
We ask our subscribers who are new to using the Internet to spend a little time with our Help Section, located on our main page. There, you will find several, very useful references on using browsers and email programs. There is also a very good tutorial site called the Beginner’s Guide, containing many interesting, informative links and pages.
The Help Section also has several good links to 56K sites, for those looking for information on KFLEX, X2 and V.90 technologies.
New Subscriber Referral Promotion!
Are you pleased with our service? Do you know someone who is unhappy with their current Internet/On-line service?
Why not do them, and yourself, a favor?
Just recommend our service to them. If they subscribe, and tell us you referred them, we will give you a free month of access!
They will appreciate your recommendation and you’ll save a little money!
Again this month, over a dozen subscribers are getting their access in May for free - by referring new subscribers.
Everybody wins!
SysAdmin's Corner
All's quiet at the Cove.
There were no significant outages on our network or our upstream links to report during the past month.
If you are interested in seeing the Internet’s performance statistics, we recommend the Internet Traffic Report, located at the bottom of the Internet Section of our website.
During the summer months, we will hold only one class each month. Cape Ann subscribers are still invited to attend these classes at half-price!
Classes at our Salem facility will be in May on the 11th and 25th and in June on the 22nd.
What's New at the Cove is a monthly publication of Cove Communications.
