New Equipment, New Services!

We've been very busy lately purchasing and installing new servers and modems to improve our service to you.

The Hard Disk Cafe is now equipped with "industrial-strength," rack mounted 28.8 BOCA RESEARCH modems. These modems are anticipated to provide consistent, reliable access to our Cape Ann subscribers.

We've also installed a virtual web/FTP site for our business customers, called harbor.cove.com. (We have even bigger news - wait for next month's newsletter for details!)

There is also a new virtual website for our subscribers' pages called marina.cove.com which allows any of our subscribers to upload and modify their own pages on the World Wide Web. This is a free service that is included with your subscription and we encourage our subscribers to make use of this new facility.

Please contact the office for details on how to establish your own personal web site.

A New Limit on Incoming E-Mail

It seems that about once a month our mail server gets "clogged" with an enormous email file.

In the past we have not restricted the size of e-mail files coming into our site, but now we've decided that in the interest, and the convenience, of the majority to limit incoming e-mail files to a maximum of 1 megabyte - one million bytes.

This limit is still very generous when one considers that the average e-mail file is only 2 or 3 thousand bytes.

Subscribers who have a requirement to receive larger than 1Mb e-mail files can simply contact the office, and make arrangements to receive those files via FTP at no extra charge.

Have You Noticed?
North of Boston On-line

The first edition of our electronic magazine has been released! Our access monitoring software shows that this magazine is being very well received in our area and has been read as far away as the United Kingdom.

We anticipate issuing the second edition in September, and publishing a new edition every other month thereafter. We encourage our subscribers to recommend or even submit stories that depict the historical and cultural aspects of our region.

Stories with photographs will be considered first for publication. All suggestions or submissions should be e-mailed to the editor, homan@cove.com.

New Faces

The photos of Marblehead Harbor gracing our Homepage are the work of the highly regarded photographer Harold Bantly. Bantly's work has been featured in many area exhibits, in Salem State College publications, photo essays, regional magazines and calendars, and several national publications.

Needless to say, we're extremely pleased with the opportunity to exhibit his work on our pages.

Angela Arena is now working with us as an HTML copywriter for North of Boston On-line, and creating web pages for our business customers. Angela holds a B.A. from Boston University, and has a strong background in journalism.

Discussion Groups

Please check the Discussion Groups Page located on our main page for discussion group listings.

People who subscribe to these lists will find the discussions in their email. (Similar to Rockport's existing mailing list.)

We encourage our subscribers to submit topic areas for discussion. Any topic of general interest to the community is most welcome.

Internet Training

Due to scheduling difficulties, there will be no classes held at the Hard Disk Cafe during the month of August. Classes at the Hard Disk Cafe will resume in September, on the 7th and 21st.

Classes will be held at the Cove in Salem on August 12th and 26th; September 9th and 23rd. These classes are offered at the highly reduced rate of $20 for Cove subscribers. Seating is limited and reserved on a first come first served basis, so please call the office in advance if you wish to attend.

Civic Matters

Our Public Opinions Page is constantly being updated to address matters of civic importance to our communities. We encourage our subscribers to check this page on a regular basis, to keep up with these important matters.

Cove Hosts Salem Public Library Program

The Cove's computer lab is being used by the Salem Public Library Intro to the Internet Program. Grammar school-aged children are gaining hands-on experience cruising the net. We also welcome other organizations to make use of our facility. Please call the office for additional details.
