Got Our Newsgroups Workin'...For those of you who have wondered why you couldn't access the USENET Newsgroups from Netscape - we had to make some modifications to our NNTP server for two reasons: 1) we had changed our news feed, and 2) we had to filter out the alt.* Newsgroups. This took a bit of tinkering, but we are now back up. |
Cove's Newsgroups Policy...As you know, we intentionally prevent access to the alt.* Newsgroups, since many contain material of an adult and/or potentially offensive nature. At this time, we post the Comp.*, Biz.*, and NE.* Newsgroups. We want to post all Newsgroups of interest to our subscribers, even if it is an alt.* newsgroup that is clearly unobjectionable. We ask you to request additional Newsgroups from us. This makes it easier for us to manage this service (i.e., there are over 3,500 Newsgroups, the grand majority of which no one is interested in, so we intend to post only those of interest to our subscribers, as long as they do not contain adult and/or potentially offensive material.) |

More Graphics...You have no doubt noticed that we have made some changes to our homepage. Thanks to Roger Martin, we are displaying a great picture of Rockport's coastline. We've got a trick or two up our sleeve(s) for this view, so stay tuned. We also just received a photo CD of North Shore and Cape Ann pictures which we will be integrating into our pages this upcoming month. |
More Help is Now Available...Many of you have recently requested more information on how to use Netscape and Eudora. If you look at our "help" section on the homepage, you will see that it now goes to the Cove's new Help Page. From here, you can access the documentation for using Eudora (quite a large file with lots of useful information), starting off points for information on software and hardware, as well as the Netscape tutorial. Anyone interested in taking a class on Internet use can contact Maggie Bishop at North Shore Community College, or Andrea Swirka at Salem State College - both sponsor Internet courses here at the Cove's facility. We can also provide special training sessions for particular groups, just give us a call. |
Speaking of Netscape...Several subscribers are having difficulty accessing the Cove directly from Netscape. It seems that on certain computers, Netscape comes up before the Trumpet Winsock has had the opportunity to complete its negotiations with the Cove's servers. If this happens to you, there are two possible remedies: 1) start the Trumpet before you start Netscape, or 2) after you receive the URL error message, click on home or reload again. If you still have trouble, email to us, so we can further investigate this glitch. |
More Changes to Follow...We are gearing up to present our municipal pages, complete with city and town hall offices, on our pages. This has taken a lot of effort and coordination on the part of municipal employees and volunteers at the Cove. Thanks to all of you for time and effort. We are still testing e-mail exchange with Beverly and are looking for any other municipalities interested in doing this type of project. |
