CoveCam to Get Dedicated Server

Inside this issue:

The CoveCam will soon be operating on its own dedicated server.

For over six years the CoveCam has provided an on-line view of the Pickering Wharf waterfront.

At first that view was a still picture, a snapshot of the waterfront taken at the moment a visitor hit the page.

Following an upgrade several years ago, the CoveCam began providing a fully digital streaming video of the

Happy Thanksgiving!

waterfront.

That upgrade placed the video on a Windows 2000

Advanced Server, which has been acting up over the past several months. To make the video more stable, we will be placing it on its own dedicated server in November.

The CoveCam was ready when The Friendship arrived and has offered a view of that vessel ever since.

People from all over the world visit the CoveCam daily. We have received many emails, especially from former North Shore residents, thanking us for the view.

New AVG Anti-Virus Version

Those of you using AVG Anti-Virus software should be aware that the company that makes that software, Grisoft, has issued a new version, 7.0, and will no longer be supporting the old version, 6.0, after 2004.

We have been recommending AVG Anti-Virus software for several years, as it is easy to use and has a free version available.

To upgrade to version 7.0, just point your browser to http://free.grisoft.com/freeweb.php/doc/5443/lng/us and follow their directions.

Salem Facility Will Remain Open

While planning for all the upcoming equipment relocations to data centers, we have also considered closing our Salem facility.

However, after considering

this change for several months, we have decided to keep our Salem facility open.

The Salem facility, located at 27 Congress Street, will continue to serve as our

primary network hub. The site will become an equipment room and we will continue to maintain several servers there, including our new CoveCam server.

The Salem facility will become an unmanned site. Our administrative offices will be moving to Beverly within a month or so.

Help Desk Notes

SysAdmin's Corner

It was a busy month at the help desk!

Most calls were for setup information and instructions on how to receive email.

If you ever need help, please select tech support (Option 2) if you call our main office. This

will enable you to get our dialup access numbers, email settings or our toll-free help desk number.

Please remember, our help desk team is available to you 24 hours a day and the direct, toll free number is
877-221-2116.

This was a relatively quiet month on the network.

Our upstream providers reported no outages and our servers had no downtime.

We have almost completed migrating our web hosting customers' sites and email

over to the H-Sphere web hosting platform. This migration will be finished in November.

Work continues on building new servers to support our H-Sphere cluster. We plan on increasing the cluster to 8 servers by the end of April.

New Subscriber Referral Promotion!

Are you pleased with our service? Do you know someone who is unhappy with their current Internet or On-line service?

Why not do them and yourself a favor?

Just recommend our service. If they subscribe, we'll give you a free month of access!

They will appreciate your advice and you'll save a little money.

Again this month, several subscribers are getting their access in November for free - just by referring new subscribers.

Everybody wins!
