Where would you like to visit now?

Spam is an unfortunate byproduct of the Internet. We aggressively prevent most spam from reaching our customers, but a few subscribers still receive lots of it.

You can help fight the war on spam!

If you use Outlook Express, Netscape Communicator or Eudora, you already have spam blocking tools available to you. All you need to do is set them up according to your preferences. This is much easier to do than you may think; just follow the instructions below.

Outlook Express 5

Open Outlook Express. Click on the unwanted message and then click on Message > Block Sender.

 netscape properties
 netscape properties

You will receive a dialog box like this one stating that the person has been blocked from sending you future messages. Click yes to remove any messages previously sent that are still in your inbox. That's it!

Eudora

Step 1

Go to the Tools: menu and select Filters to open the Filters window.

Step 2

To add a new filter, click NEW.

Step 3

Select the options for how you want the filter to be used:

  • Incoming: The filter is invoked when messages are received.
  • Outgoing: The filter is invoked when messages are sent.
  • Manual: The filter is invoked only when you choose Filter Messages from the Special: menu.

Any combination of these options will work. In our example, we've made it an Incoming filter.

Let's add a second action to this filter.

Step 4

Define the criteria for the filter; use the header item drop-down menus and the text fields to specify which header items should include a particular string of text.

In our example above, this filter looks at the header item From:. In the white space, we've entered spammer@all4free.com. Now this filter will scan all incoming mails for the text spammer@all4free.com in the From: field. This is where you would put the e-mail name of the SPAM you received.

Step 5

Now that Eudora knows what to look for, now we need to define an action or actions to be taken on the messages that fit the criteria.

Under Action, move the mouse over the arrow next to None and click.

From this menu, choose Transfer To: This is the menu that will appear when you click on the arrow. It lists all the various actions that the filter can do.

In our example, we want all mail from spammer@all4free.com to be transferred to the Trash. So we'll select Transfer to as our action.

After you've selected Transfer to, a box will appear on the right with the mailbox In listed. Now you have to choose what mailbox the mail from spammer@all4free.com will be transferred to.

Click on the box that says In and a menu will drop down displaying all your mailboxes. In this example, we'll choose the mailbox named Trash.

That's it! Now any message from spammer@all4free.com will go right to the trash.

Netscape Communicator

Open Netscape Messenger. Click on Edit > Message Filters.

Click on New to create a new filter.

Under the filter name, enter any name you prefer for the filter (You won't need to remember this name, the blocking happens automatically in the background). Click on "Match any of the following". Keep the "sender" dropdown as it is, and to the right of the "contains" dropdown, enter the E-mail address of the spammer. In our example, it's spammer@free4all.com.

Click on the dropdown next to "Then" and select "Move to folder". Select the next dropdown and select "Trash". Click OK. Now, any messages that come from that sender will be automatically moved to the Trash.
